China blocks websites for false advertising

China has blocked 23 websites for false advertising of drug-based products and selling drugs illegally as part of a sustained campaign against such ads.

The sites either sold counterfeit drugs or publicized false, exaggerated or misleading information regarding cures for various ailments, the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) said.

Most websites disguised under the names of hospitals or medical institutions were transferred to the erstwhile Ministry of Information Industry for punishment, Xinhua news agency said quoting SFDA.

China had ordered closure of 51 websites earlier this year for carrying illegal drug advertisements.

SFDA approves drug advertisements, while the State Administration for Industry and Commerce is responsible for punishing the violators.

a real ghost story

I remember being about 8 years old. It was about the time I started taking piano lessons. My parents had just bought an old baby grand for me to start learning and practicing on.

We lived in the country just outside of Charleston, South Carolina. I lived on the second floor of our former plantation house. I was told as a child that the family that had once lived here made quite a living in agriculture predominately delving in labor accomplished through slave trade. Not that this really matters, but I just want to inform the reader of the age of the house. My room was on the second floor just beyond the doubled ended spiral staircase. The living room where our piano sat faced the Ashley River, but it could not be seen from the top of the staircase.

One night I could not sleep. I had been tossing and turning for what seemed like hours on end. Of course, I was an eight year old child so time seemed to pass slower than it would for an adult. I kept drifting off in to slumberland when finally I was awakened by the sound of a melodious piano being played. I felt as if I faintly remembered the sonata from my piano teacher's playing. But, the thought occurred to me, who would be playing the piano in the middle of the night? Neither my parents nor siblings had ever played the piano so my mind was sent racing. I was terrified beyond belief.

I slowly crawled out of bed and onto the floor tiptoeing over to my bedroom door. I opened it as if moving in slow motion as to not creak it. I moved down the hall, trying not to make a sound as I began to descend the staircase. As I walked, the piano playing got even louder. I turned the bottom of the staircase and peered across the entryway into the living room.

I stared at the baby grand piano which was in the middle of the floor. Before my eyes I saw something that I will never forget. To this day it still haunts the daylights out of me. There was a very pale white woman, fashioned in a proper ball gown from the late nineteenth or early twentieth century, sitting at the piano playing it. She stopped upon my entrance. She turned over her left shoulder and looked straight into my eyes. She raised her left arm, moved to the right of the piano bench and motioned for me to sit beside her on the piano bench.

I stood there mouth gaping open in shock as chills covered my body. Her fingers told me to come to her as she sat on the left side of the bench just waiting for me to sit down. I screamed at the top of my lungs as I ran up the staircase straight into my parent's room.

My father thought that someone was dying for me to scream in such a manner. Barely understanding my nonsensical ravings of madness he rushed with me downstairs, shotgun in hand. He threw the light switch on and bolted into the living room. There was no one to be seen. He looked all over our house and found no woman. The only thing that was any different than usual was that the piano bench was pulled out from under the piano. I never would have left it out.

I had learned six months earlier that you never leave the bench out in our house. Forgetting this had given me many beatings. But this night, the bench was out. I had not been beaten for forgetting to push it under the piano because I had placed it in its position. So how did it get pulled out? I will never know. I just assume my mind projected the entire situation. I haven't seen this woman since this incident, but I am still looking.

DOLLARS OR YUAN WHAT MATTERS FOR CHINESE ECONOMY

The U.S. dollar's depreciation is "negative" for the Chinese economy, according to China's top currency regulator. China will manage its foreign-exchange reserves "according to set guidelines," Hu Xiaolian told reporters Saturday in Beijing, where she is attending the annual meeting of the National People's Congress. "To the extent that dollar depreciation is negative for the global economy, the Chinese economy will definitely be affected."

"It's the frying pan or the fire for China," said Stephen Green, senior economist at Standard Chartered Bank Plc in Shanghai. "If they stop buying U.S. dollars or diversify, this will only do further damage to their existing holdings."

China, the second-largest foreign holder of U.S. Treasuries, said the declining dollar is a bigger concern for the Chinese economy than the yuan's gains, Chinese commerce minister Chen Deming said in December.

The dollar's depreciation makes major commodities such as gold and oil more expensive, and reduces the wealth of countries and companies that hold dollar assets, Chen said at the time.

China's economy, the world's fourth-largest, may grow 10 percent this year, according to the International Monetary Fund, down from 11.4 percent in 2007.

Taking the gross domestic product of both economies in 2007, the combined GDP of the 15 countries which use the euro overtook that of the United States when the European currency surged to a record high of more than $1.56 per euro.

"The curious outcome of breaching this latest milestone is that the size of the euro zone's annual output has now exceeded that of the U.S.," the economics department of Goldman Sachs, the Wall Street investment bank, said in a note to clients.

Sanjay Dutt moves apex court for permission to go abroad

Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, out on bail, Thursday moved the Supreme Court, seeking permission to go abroad for the shooting of a film.

In his petition filed through advocate Hari Shankar, Dutt also sought release of his passport, impounded by the designated anti-terrorism court of Mumbai, to enable his trip abroad.

Dutt’s passport has been impounded by the court as a condition for his release on bail, granted by the apex court, pending its decision on his petition challenging his conviction and six-year sentence for possessing illegal firearms in the run-up to the 1993 serial terror bombings in Mumbai.

On Monday, the apex court had refused permission to Samir Hingora, a Hindi film producer convicted in the bombings case, to go abroad.

Refusing permission, Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan said if he was so keen to go abroad, he should first spend the remaining term of his nine-year sentence in a prison.

Hingora, who has already spent a little over five years in the Arthur Road jail in Mumbai, was granted bail by the apex court earlier.

He was given a nine-year jail term by the anti-terrorism court of Special Judge P.D. Kode for supplying arms to Dutt through gangster Abu salem on the orders of Anees Ibrahim, brother of fugitive don Dawood Ibrahim.

Vodafone asked to refund value-added service charge

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) Thursday ordered leading telecom operator Vodafone-Essar to refund all money that it has charged for providing value-added services (VAS) to its subscribers without seeking their approval.

“The authority had received complaints from the subscribers of Vodafone-Essar Mobile Services Ltd regarding provision of value-added services without consent,” TRAI said in a statement. The firm admitted to “technical error”, it added.

“Based on the explanation furnished by the service provider, it cannot be concluded that the value-added service was provided with the explicit consent of the consumers, particularly when the consumers have denied having given any such explicit consent,” it added.

The regulator has asked the company to refund the money within 15 days.

TRAI also said the money be refunded even to those customers who were denied of their consent while activating value-added services in their account and also to those who were offered the services free of cost initially and charged later.

However, the company said in a statement: “Vodafone recently received customer queries via TRAI regarding activation of VAS wherein TRAI had enquired whether explicit consent was obtained from the customers.

“For all these cases due proves and explanation have been provided. VAS are activated by Vodafone only after receiving explicit instructions from customers over voices, SMS or IVR (Interactive Voice Record), records of which are maintained as per requirements.”

Aspirin may not help prevent second stroke

"Millions of people use low-dose aspirin either for prevention of a second stroke, second heart attack or second episode of peripheral artery disease," said Gengo.

"In those three indications, it's crystal clear that aspirin reduces the risk of a second heart attack or stroke in most patients. But we have known for years that in some stroke and heart attack patients, aspirin has no preventive effect," he added.

With no definitive data on the frequency of this condition, known as aspirin resistance, physicians were left with a best guess of between 5 and 50 percent, said Gengo.

However, the researchers have now confirmed the 20 percent figure through a strictly controlled study conducted over 29 months in 653 consecutive stroke patients.

Aspirin reduces the risk of a cardiovascular event by preventing blood platelets from aggregating in the arteries and obstructing blood flow.

If blood drawn from a patient taking aspirin shows that platelets are still aggregating, that patient is diagnosed as being aspirin resistant.

If a stroke patient has a second stroke while on aspirin, the patient has experienced what is known as clinical aspirin failure.

"We've known about clinical aspirin failure for many years. We're just beginning to understand clinical aspirin resistance. The major question recently has been, 'If you are aspirin resistant, does that mean you are more likely to be a clinical aspirin failure? Is one related to the other?' The answer is, likely, 'yes'," said Gengo.

"That's one of the critical pieces of information provided by this paper. We looked at how frequently aspirin resistance occurred in all patients and its prevalence in patients who suffered clinical aspirin failure. What we found was, across the board, about 80 percent of the patients in our study, were aspirin sensitive -- their platelets did not aggregate in arteries -- and 20 percent were aspirin resistant.

Climate change could cripple world’s transport systems

Though the impact of climate change will vary globally, it will be widespread and costly in human and economic terms - and will require significant changes in the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of transportation systems, warned the NRC report.

The report noted that climate predictions used by transportation planners and engineers may no longer be reliable, given the changing face of new weather and climate extremes.

Infrastructure pushed beyond its limits can become stressed and fail, as seen with loss of the US 90 Bridge in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

“The time has come for transportation professionals (worldwide) to acknowledge and confront the challenges posed by climate change, and to incorporate the most current scientific knowledge into the planning of transportation systems,” said Schwartz.

“It is now possible to project climate changes for large sub continental regions, including eastern US, a scale better suited for considering regional and local transportation infrastructure,” he added.

The report identified five climate changes of particular importance to transportation: increases in very hot days and heat waves; increases in Arctic temperatures; rising sea levels; increases in intense precipitation events; and increases in hurricane intensity.

In addition to climate changes, there are a number of contributing factors that will likely lead to vulnerabilities in coastal-area transportation systems.

Population is projected to grow in coastal areas, which will boost demand for transportation infrastructure and increase the number of people and businesses potentially in harm’s way.

Besides, erosion and loss of wetlands have removed crucial buffer zones that once protected infrastructure, and thousands of miles of coastal highways are already exposed to periodic storm flooding.

“The highways that currently serve as evacuation routes and endure periodic flooding could be compromised with strong hurricanes and more intense precipitation, making some of these routes impassable.”

Tweaking NOTEPAD

Ever thought of tweaking NOTEPAD?? I guess no..!But i gave a try for tweaking NOTEPAD..! n c wat i got.....

Most of us use Notepad for some or the other purpose...some advanced users may do their stuff in NoteTab Pro,etc.
This l'il tweak will remove the hassles of using the menu(which i found to be very irritating while using Find, Replace, etc). It actually removes the menubar!

OK! Before proceeding, BACKUP YOUR NOTEPAD (Its present in %WINDIR%\Notepad.exe)
After dat delete the notepad.exe file frm dllcache(it's a folder created by Windows XP creators to store all the inportant system files as backup)
You can find "dllcache" folder in system32 folder(after unhiding the system files)

Now comes the tweakin process

Google to cut jobs

Google Inc plans to make an unspecified number of job cuts at DoubleClick Inc following the closing of its $3.1 billion acquisition of the advertising technology company, Google said.

In a statement on Google's website, the Internet leader said it has been limited by law from making detailed integration plans, but by early April it expects to have a plan for staffing levels in DoubleClick's US operations.

"An immediate task we'll undertake over the next few weeks is matching and aligning DoubleClick employees with our organizational plan for the business," Google said in a blog post.

"As with most mergers, there may be reductions in headcount. We expect these to take place in the US and possibly in other regions as well," the company said.

DoubleClick has 1,500 employees. Outside of the United States, Google will begin consultations with employee organizations on potential job reductions in line with local laws, it said.

A pioneer in the field of Web advertising, DoubleClick was headquartered in New York in the same building as Google's local offices. Google completed the acquisition earlier Tuesday.

iPod Nano under scanner in Japan

TOKYO: Japan is investigating a possible defect in Apple Inc's iPod after one of the popular digital music players reportedly shot out sparks while recharging, a government official said.

An official at the trade and economy ministry overseeing product problems said a defect in the lithium-ion battery is suspected in the iPod Nano, model number MA099J/A. He spoke on customary condition of anonymity, adding that he was reiterating a ministry position.

The problem, which surfaced in January in Kanagawa Prefecture, southwest of Tokyo, was reported by Apple in March to the ministry, according to the official. No one was injured, he said.

Apple Japan did not contest the ministry statement but refused further comment. The ministry has instructed Apple Japan to find out the cause of what it is categorising as a fire linked to the iPod, and Apple must report back to the government.

The lithium-ion battery has been blamed for a series of blazes in laptops recently, resulting in massive global recalls.

The ministry said that about 425,000 iPods of the same suspected model were shipped into Japan by Apple. It was unclear how many were in stores or people's homes.

The shipment began in September 2005 and was discontinued after September 2006, the ministry said.

Japan's economy grew 3.5% in Q4

Japan's economy grew at a brisk 3.5 per cent annualised pace in the fourth quarter of 2007, showing unexpected resilience in the face of growing fears of a US recession, official figures showed on Wednesday.

Investors reacted positively to the robust fourth-quarter growth, which was only slightly weaker than an initial estimate of a 3.7 per cent expansion in the three months to December.

While business investment held up better than expected, the report failed to completely erase concerns about the outlook for the world's second largest economy.

The worry is that Japan's export-led recovery could stall if US economic troubles deepen, hitting demand for Asian goods.

Gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 0.9 per cent compared with the previous quarter, unchanged from the initial estimate, the Cabinet Office said.

Financial markets had been braced for an even weaker performance after a finance ministry survey showed a 7.7 per cent year-on-year fall in capital spending in the three months to December.

"The figure was not revised down as much as the market had feared," said Daisuke Uno, chief strategist at Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp (SMBC).

The stronger-than expected-growth report helped to lift investors' spirits.

Japanese stocks surged 2.7 per cent in early trade, helped by a powerful rally on overseas markets after major central banks moved to pump hundreds of billions of dollars into the financial system to ease a global credit squeeze.

"Capital investment was not revised down as much as markets had expected, which signals it remains strong alongside robust exports," said Norio Miyagawa, economist at Shinko Research Institute.

"However, there remains a gap between stronger exports and a slump in household consumption," he added.

The government said corporate capital investment in new equipment and factories increased by 2.0 percent quarter-on-quarter, down slightly from an initial 2.9 per cent rise.

Private and household consumption both grew by a tepid 0.2 per cent. The Japanese economy is gradually rebounding from recession in the 1990s but consumer spending has remained sluggish, raising worries that the export-led recovery could be hit hard by a global slowdown.

Despite the better than expected GDP data, concerns about the health of the world's second largest economy have grown amid fears of a US recession that could hit Japanese exports and corporate earnings.

London dirtiest city in Europe

London is the dirtiest and most expensive city in Europe, while Brussels is the most boring, according to a British survey published on Wednesday.

London edged out Paris for the unwanted accolade of dirtiest city in the survey of more than 1,100 travellers carried out by TripAdvisor.

Respondents said that Paris was the most unfriendly, followed by London and Moscow, but the French capital is still working its old magic as it was voted the most romantic destination in Europe and the best for shopping and dining.

London won for having the best nightlife and public parks. The cleanest city is Zurich, the survey said, although the tidy Swiss city also finished equal second behind EU hub Brussels as the most boring place.

Prague was elected the best bargain city, followed by Budapest and Lisbon. Despite the weak dollar, half of the Americans surveyed said they planned to visit Europe this year, the same number as last year.

Top film stars could soon act as brand ambassadors of the Indian Cricket League and discussions for taking them onboard are going on, ICL's Executive Board Chairman Kapil Dev said on Tuesday.

"Yes, we are talking to some of the leading Bollywood personalities," Kapil said.

He, however, refused to divulge the details about who ICL was in discussion with or in what form the actors could associate with the rebel league.

"They can be our brand ambassadors or simply our supporters," he said.

Asked if filmstars Kareena Kapoor and Aamir Khan could associate with them, he said, "I cannot tell you anything right away.

"Whenever our talks mature and we have something concrete, we will let everybody know," he said.

When another ICL top executive, Kiran More was asked about possibility of Kareena and Aamir associating with them, he replied "I have heard about this from my media friends, but I cannot tell you anything definite."

Brain Reading Device Can Predict What People See

A new computer program can match brain activity with visual images and even predict what people are seeing, a study has shown.The work raises the possibility that one day computers could "read" a person's brain to digitally re-create memories, dreams, or imaginings.

Previous attempts to decode vision in this way could only extract simple information about images, such as their physical orientation, and could not identify images that participants were seeing for the first time.

"Our technique overcomes this limitation, and we show that we can perform identification for novel images," said study team member Kendrick Kay of the University of California, Berkeley.

The new computer model is described in today's issue of the journal Nature.

Master Predictor

The researchers used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure activity in the visual cortices of participants' brains as they looked at photographs of animals, food, people, and other common objects.

The fMRI technique is a relatively new way to measure changes in the brain's blood oxygen levels, which have strong links to neural activity.The collected data were used to "teach" a computer program to associate certain blood flow patterns with particular kinds of images.

Participants were then asked to look at a second set of images they had never encountered before.The model was programmed to take what it had learned from the previous pairings and figure out what was being shown in the new set of images.For a collection of 120 images, the model correctly identified what a person was looking at 90 percent of the time. When the set was enlarged to a thousand images, accuracy was about 80 percent.

Kickstart for forumula one season 2008

The 2008 Formula One season will be the 59th FIA Formula One World Championship season. It will begin on 16 March and end on 2 November after eighteen Grands Prix.

The season sees the banning of traction control after it was re-introduced in 2001. 2008 also introduces two new street circuits. The Valencia Street Circuit and Singapore Street Circuit will host the European GP and the new Singapore GP respectively. The Singapore GP will also be the first Formula One event held at night.


The Australian Grand Prix will kick off proceedings on March 16, followed by Malaysia and Bahrain, before the championship heads to Europe. Turkey has been brought forward to May, while the sole North American round in Canada provisionally retains its traditional June slot.

The Valencia race, to be known as the European Grand Prix, will take place in August, while the other new event, the first-ever Formula One night race, will be staged in Singapore in late September. The season will finish in Brazil at the start of November.

Just cant wait for David Blaine's new stunt where he will be slated to air live in May 2008. Regarding the stunt, Blaine stated, "If you thought my previous stunts were intense, this new one will leave you speechless. I can’t reveal any details (yet) but I’ve started preparing and training for the most dangerous and death-defying challenge of my career."

Several news have reported that Blaine's new stunt will help him to break the world record for sleep Deprivation , currently held by Englishman Tony Wright . Tony's record of 11.5 days without sleep left him with hallucinations - for example, dreaming while awake . But Guinness world book of records cite that record because of the grave risk to mental health.

Though this has not been officially confirmed, a posting on Blaine's site says, "The idea came to me during a sleepless ." and in a November 1 posting, Blaine stated that he has altered his diet to mostly raw food, a practice which is advocated by Wright . Blaine said that this will be the best

Jennifer Connelly joins Keanu Reeves in Sci-Fi Remake

Jennifer Connelly will star opposite Keanu Reeves in a remake of the 1951 sci-fi film The Day the Earth Stood Still. She will play the role of a widow and young mother who meets Reeves’s , Klaatu, an extraterrestrial who attempts to convince mankind to live peacefully or face annihilation from other planets along with his indestructible robot , Jaden Smith as Jacob, and also Kathy Bates . Filming is due to start next year, with the director of The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Scott Derrickson, at the helm.

This movie will more likely remain true to the story upon which the 1951 movie is based .

In the 1951 movie, Gort is described as one of a race of robots created by the planets to maintain peace throughout the galaxy. If the 2008 remake follows the short story by Harry Bates , "Farewell to the Master" upon which the 1951 movie is based, it will be revealed at the end of the movie by Gort himself that he is the master, and not Klaatu.

British parents are much to ours they believe certain things that most of the Indians think uncultured . Half of British parents think childhood ends at 11 years old, a survey said on Monday.

They allow their children to drink alcohol before age 18 and nearly a half of them allow their 16 year-olds to spend a night at their partner's house (sleep together) , said the survey .

The ICM survey of almost 1200 parents with children aged under 18 , found that more than half of the parents believe their children are 'young adults' at 11.

"I feel it is a real shame that children act like adults at an alarmingly early age," Wilson told Britain's Times newspaper.

The survey was commissioned by to help launch Wilson's latest book: My Sister Jodie.

"Because the narrators in my novels are teenagers, it may look as though I am pushing for teenagers to have more freedom," Wilson said. "But it is not what I believe."

Fifty-three percent of teenagers under 16 are allowed to stay out later than 11 pm while more than two-thirds of pre-teen girls are allowed to get their ears pierced, the survey showed.

Wilson urged parents to be stubborn in not giving in to their children's unreasonable demands. "Parents need to take a stand, to tell their children 'I don't care if everyone else in the class is allowed to do this or that. You're not,'" she said.

"No one wants a confrontation, but adolescence is a tricky time and it is the nature of the beast that teenagers are a bit stroppy. You just have to accept that."
